WSOR 3813 |
Description: |
A WSOR (WATCO) train fould the County Highway FF grade crossing in Fisk as it picks up some GACX cars from a siding. The loco's are on the 1910 built bridge across Eight Mile Creek, which has since been replaced over the summer of 2016. The neat Old Style sign at the local bar has also met it's demise over the latter half of the 2016 summer, due to vandalism. I have noticed these types of signs are starting to disappear as beer marketing practices have been changing. |

Description: |
After swapping cars at the Expera Specialty Solutions (formerly Thilmany Paper) mill, the CN local to kaukauna from Neenah climbs back uphill from the Fox River to get back to the mainline. Along the way upgrade, the train crosses an old CNW swing bridge across a navigational canal for the Fox River. The canal was out of service and dry for many years, but the locks and navigation system were all re-opened from Green Bay to Lake Winnebago in the fall of 2015. Shortly thereafter, the last lock to Lake Winnebago was closed due to an invasive species of fish being found below the lock. |

CN 2574 |
Description: |
Between Neenah and Oshkosh, a fast moving CN freight soars along the former Soo Line / Wisconsin Central main at Winnebago. The C&NW right of way through the Fox Valley to Green Bay is about 50 feet to the right of the rails. The C&NW right of way no longer has rails or ties, it would make a great trail along an active rail line. Some time ago, there was a spur off the C&NW line here to the state hospital, known as Winnebago. This line has certainly changed over the last couple decades. Twenty years ago it was a busy line for the modern Wisconsin Central, with a fairly large number of local industries to serve. Now, though the number of local businesses has diminished, the main is busier than ever as part of a trans-con for the CN. |

A Georgia Pacific facility is the back drop to this scene. The rails are parallel to State Street here and served many industries from this spur, the numbers of which have been on the decline. Fortunately, as new industrial parks develop in the area, new rail customers appear. The buildings in the new industrial parks have no where near the character and architecture as these older buildings though. |

Adams Yard |
Description: |
Looking west into the former CNW yard at Adams. This line was built in the 1880's and was to be located 2 miles to the north in Friendship. Local land owners in Friendship decided to use this as an opportunity to inflate the prices they wanted for the right of way. In return, the railroad built here instead. Originally the railroad named this location Friendship but it was confusing because there were two Friendship's on the line. The citizens of the city were given a voice in the change and a vote was taken. There were two choices, Adams, for President Adams and Nottingham. Obviously Adams won out. This is a fairly important yard on this former "Route of the 400". A concrete coal tower of CNW heritage still stands tall here as well. For as many trains as are seen here in the yard, activity on the line between here and Milwaukee is rather hit and miss. |

Industry Along the CNW Line |
Description: |
Heading out of the former CNW Appleton yard, the CN now, first encounters this area about a mile toward the east. The tan building with the blanked windows was Appleton Wire. Appleton Wire made the woven screen belts upon which paper is made. They had their own wire plant across Lawe Street in the white and tan building just behind the crossing signals. Appleton Wire sold off the wire mill in the late 1970's as most belts/fabrics for paper making shifted to being made with monofilament rather than metal. While Appleton Wire is closed, the wire mill is still going and even has a second plant on the Kimberly Subdivision. The wire mill has changed hands and names quite often over the years but is relatively known as Valley Cast. The red building is the Appleton Paper (Appvion) mill in Appleton. This paper mill is still going strong, a close look at their siding shows some railcars spotted. |

Gilbert Paper Spur |
Description: |
The pile of rubble is what is left of the Gilbert Paper production facility in Menasha. Gilbert Paper was closed in 2001 after Mead Corporation sold it to Fox River Paper. The building standing is part of the Banta Printing facility on Doty Island, which was closed after RR Donnelly purchased Banta Corporation. The wooden trestle on the opposite side of the Fox River was the spur upon which the Milwaukee Road spotted boxcars for the Gilbert Paper Company. The cars were actually spotted over water. To get to this trestle, the MILW crossed over the Fox on a bridge from about the location of the camera. The bridge angled across the river to the left from the camera's location and had a switchback to come out onto the Gilbert Paper spur. This area of Menasha was a thriving bed of paper, printing and packaging industry, and had a myriad of rails to serve the businesses. Much of the network still exists, but enough of the industry has disappeared to take a bite out of it. Another spur came to Gilbert Paper from the CNW Neenah yard on the other side of the river. The plant received its coal and chemicals on that spur. The spur still exists, but only goes as far as the old General Chemical (Chem Trade) complex. Gilbert Paper received boxcar loads of pulp material. The pulp material would be sulfite (wood pulp) in bales, usually from Georgia Kraft Mill in Brunswick, GA. They would also receive rags from cotton mills and from the garment factories in the east for the higher grades of paper. Gilbert Paper shipped about 75% of their product by rail. The power house would go through 3 to 4 carloads of coal per day, along with 3 to 4 truck loads. The mill received about 3 tank cars of chlorine per week. The factory was switched twice per day. This information comes from a long time employee (electrical engineer) who retired in the late 1980's, so after that, things may have changed a bit. However, that is how it was for most of his career. |

Milwaukee Road Station |
Description: |
Located on the Mineral Point Branch radiating from Janesville, along the old Milwaukee Road, the Brodhead Historical Society houses it's museum in this station built in 1881. The museum is free and well worth the time to visit, and worthy of a donation too! The rails are still active with the Wisconsin and Southern using them to get to Monroe. |

Milwaukee Road Passing Siding |
Description: |
Along the old Oshkosh and Mississippi Railway right of way, the Milwaukee Road had a passing siding and some structures along it. The structures remain a mystery to me and the Wisconsin and Southern uses the siding to store cars off spot for Oshkosh. |

The Last Section of Loop |
Description: |
This is a section of the reverse loop that served Fox Lake. The 1884 station resides in it's rightful place along the last remaining section of the loop. The smaller buildings were moved to this location for the historical society which houses it's museum within the depot. |

Soo Line Roundhouse |
Description: |
A remnant attesting to Rhinelander's status as a diviosion point for the Soo Line is this four stall roundhouse. The roundhouse was built in 1899 for a cost of $4,400 and was served by a 60' turntable. An 80' turntable was installed in 1916, which in turn was removed by the modern Wisconsin Central in the late 1990's. Soo Line reached Rhinelander from the west when construction crews got here on 20 November 1886. |
