Appleton Junction |
Description: |
A look generally west down the main line from the West 2nd Street grade crossing. The layout of the yard has changed some since the Chicago and Northwestern era. The Fox River Valley Railroad operated here briefly in the early 1990's until being purchased by the modern Wisconsin Central. There is a wye here yet, a connection with the Shawano Sub (formerly part of the Soo Line and modern Wisconsin Central. The Line heading down off to the left is the Kimberly Sub, which once reached as far as Kaukauna South. It now ends in Combined Locks at the Appleton Coated paper mill. Traffic to Appleton Coated is now in jeopardy due to financial struggles of the mill. Hopefully, judging by the number of cars seen here, there is still enough traffic on the Kimberly sub and the Appleton area to keep things going. There is also a branch from here to serve New London. |

A Look Into the Yard |
Description: |
Looking generally west into the former CNW yard in Appleton. Signage clearly shows it to be under the CN now. The yard lead can be seen running from behind the photographer, into the yard tracks. the line that curves off to the right is the northeast leg of the wye located here. From that leg, the Shawano sub can be reached at the former Soo yard north of College Avenue, or a route can be chosen to run to Greenville, Hortonville and New London. |

CNW Swing Bridge |
Description: |
A more recent look at the old Chicago and Northwestern swing bridge across the navigation canal on the east end of the "flats" of Appleton along the Fox River. The bridge still looks as interesting as ever. It's a shame the track in the flats has been almost completely removed, a sign of the manufacturing facilities closing. |

Former Chicago and Northwestern Swing Bridge |
Description: |
Looking back down the branch line toward Appleton Junction from the Newberry Trail. A look at the top of the trees on the right shows the smokestack for Neenah Paper, the last business with a railroad spur. They get boxcars spotted at the mill. They have a second track that once received tank cars, but have not used that spot for at least a decade. |

Former Milwaukee Road Bridge |
Description: |
A look at the long abandoned Milwaukee Road bridge across the Fox River in the "flats" of Appleton. This bridge brought the Milwaukee from behind Fox River Paper ( Neenah Paper now)across the water to the north shore and Foremost Dairy. Lawe Street is the concrete span behind the rail bridge. Most of the buildings in the view are part of the Lawrence University campus. |

Former Milwaukee Road Bridge |
Description: |
This long abandoned Milwaukee Road bridge once gave the Milwaukee access to the north side of the Fox River. In Appleton, there are no manufacturing businesses left along the river geographically beyond Neenah Paper. |
