CN 4100
Title:  CN 4100
Description:  The 9601 takes on fuel as the 4100 waits its turn. When the CNW worked out of this yard the engine servicing facilities were a bit less spartan. The facilities were behind the trees and included an engine house. I can't recall a turntable in the early 1980's. The area that held the CNW's engine facilities, though now gone, is the site of a good busy rail served customer.

CNW Ancillary Yard
Title:  CNW Ancillary Yard
Description:  Looking back towards the small yard at Combined Locks from Kaukauna side of the line which followed along the Fox River to Kaukauna South. This small yard is used to switch the Apvion (Appleton Coated Paper) mill located in Combined locks. This end of the line from Appleton was a very busy location which also served another large paper mill in Kimberly along with a paper coating manufacturer. The Kimberly mill was bought and closed by foreign investors making traffic here, not as high volume as it once was. The line along the south bank of the Fox has also been cut just a couple hundred feet behind the camera vantage point. Kaukauna is served from the former CNW main between Appleton and Green Bay.

Combined Locks Ancillary Yard
Title:  Combined Locks Ancillary Yard
Description:  A view looking toward Appleton, if one were to follow the tracks, of the former CNW yard used to serve two large paper mills and some smaller businesses. In the modern Wisconsin Central era, there were a couple turns ran down here from Neenah and a switch crew stationed here. The CN works the line out of Appleton, from what I gather, and usually only once per day. The traffic base here was cut significantly when the former Kimberly Clark mill in Kimberly was closed.

Carbonates Facility
Title:  Carbonates Facility
Description:  This facility located in Kimberly, Wisconsin, was originally built by Pfizer Specialty Minerals Group, in 1992, to provide precipitated calcium carbonate to the Repap paper mill located on an adjacent property. The plant shipped a slurry of Albacar HO(A), a high-brightness, high-opacity pigment directly to Repap via a pipeline for use in it's coated paper production. Over the years, the facility has had a convoluted history that is somewhat difficult to track. Before 1995, Pfizer Specialty Minerals spun off what became Minerals Technology Inc., who ran this plant in connection to Repap. Eventually, as the paper mill changed hands numerous times until being closed by New Page in 2008 (about a year after buying it, despite quality production), the pcc facility changed hands numerous times too. Imery's / ECC ran it for a time and decided to divest from the Kimberly plant in February 2014. The facility was reported to have been sold to OMYA who announced it was to close the plant by December 31. 2014. As of April 2015, it seems the facility is in operation under the name of Kimberly Carbonates LLC. However, according to tax records, the property is owned by Imery's Paper Carbonates LLC, and has been since at least 2012. It's listed hours of operation have diminished since the days of Repap affiliation, but at least it is still going. The paper mill for which this facility was built was located to the rear of the camera placement, and had a large number of tracks to serve it. It was originally built in 1889, the beginnings of Kimberly-Clark.

CNIS 413535
Title:  CNIS 413535
Description:  Two boxcars spotted at Neenah Paper in the once thriving Appleton "flats" industrial area. The "flats" was once full of industry and the manufacturing jobs it supplied. Most of the area is now being redeveloped into apartments and condos. The jobs are gone. This spur has the last remaining car spots in existence in the "flats'. The only remaining track left besides this spur is the mainline of the Kimberly Subdivision, which runs through the "flats" to reach Kimberly and Combined Locks. Neenah Paper's spur has spots for two boxcars and another spot for either a tank or covered hopper supplying chemicals. The spot for the chemical car has not been used for a very long time.

Description:  Running to spot one car at one of the local customers from the former CNW yard in Appleton. The train is about to cross the intersection of W. North Street/ W. Packard Street and N. Appeton Street. The green space, Packard Place, may have been the location of a grain elevator. I know there was one in the vicinity, but I cannot remember exactly where.

Description:  The CN local for Kimberly and Little Chute crosses Lawe Street and heads for the former C&NW swing bridge across the navigation canal. The trailing point turnout going off to the left rear of the train serves Neenah Paper. Neenah Paper is the only remaining customer for the railroad in this once heavy industrial area. After crossing the swing bridge, the train will be climbing out of the "Flats" and head for Kimberly.

IC 9571
Title:  IC 9571
Description:  Two units work the former CNW line from Appleton Junction to Kaukauna South, which now ends here in Combined Locks at the Appvion paper mill. This facility is the Appleton Coated Papers mill. The mill is switched on two sides by the railroad, which had enough business to warrant a small yard on the opposite side from this location. Most of those tracks are now gone, as it waqs probably used in conjunction with switching the closed NuPage (Kimberly Clark) mill in Kimberly. The modern Wisconsin Central had enough business on this line to actually station a crew down in this river valley.

Appleton Junction
Title:  Appleton Junction
Description:  A look generally west down the main line from the West 2nd Street grade crossing. The layout of the yard has changed some since the Chicago and Northwestern era. The Fox River Valley Railroad operated here briefly in the early 1990's until being purchased by the modern Wisconsin Central. There is a wye here yet, a connection with the Shawano Sub (formerly part of the Soo Line and modern Wisconsin Central. The Line heading down off to the left is the Kimberly Sub, which once reached as far as Kaukauna South. It now ends in Combined Locks at the Appleton Coated paper mill. Traffic to Appleton Coated is now in jeopardy due to financial struggles of the mill. Hopefully, judging by the number of cars seen here, there is still enough traffic on the Kimberly sub and the Appleton area to keep things going. There is also a branch from here to serve New London.

A Look Into the Yard
Title:  A Look Into the Yard
Description:  Looking generally west into the former CNW yard in Appleton. Signage clearly shows it to be under the CN now. The yard lead can be seen running from behind the photographer, into the yard tracks. the line that curves off to the right is the northeast leg of the wye located here. From that leg, the Shawano sub can be reached at the former Soo yard north of College Avenue, or a route can be chosen to run to Greenville, Hortonville and New London.
