Main Street Grade Crossing |
Description: |
The heart of rail activity in Chilton centers around this network of tracks il Chilton. This line is former Milwaukee Road, and their old freight house still stands on the opposite side of the grade crossing. It is the old white building with peeling&paint and somewhat sagging roof over hang. Silos for Kaytee, a manufacturer of bird feed, are in the distance. |

CN 2820 |
Description: |
A CN stack train storms over a bridge on the south side of Oshkosh. Trains run along this corridor parallel South Main at speeds around 30 MPH. The modern Wisconsin Central and the city worked to increase train speeds and safety through Oshkosh after the WC purchased the Fox River Valley Railroad. Grade crossings were closed, the old Soo Line (WC) route through town was pulled up, gates were installed at all grade crossings and a no horn order (not what I would consider a safety enhancement) was put into effect. There are some nice areas along this stretch of the line to watch the trains while enjoying some of Oshkosh's park land. |

Description: |
Canadian National usually works Oshkosh at night, running a turn from Neenah. The local is caught here on the east side of the Jackson Street grade crossing. It is between Jackson Street (State Road 76) and Main on the north end of town. The train will be headed to switch covered hoppers stored on the west end of this former CNW industrial spur used in service with Bemis Performance and Pacur. A good sign here is two empty center beam bulkhead flats that could have only come from Noffke Lumber. That is a good sign of activity at the lumber yard. |

CN 2839 |
Description: |
A CN train heads railroad east across the E. 14th Avenue grade crossing in Oshkosh. Five units are on the head of this train running on what was originally CNW right of way along Lake Winnebago. The trains roll through Oshkosh at speed up to 35 MPH, thanks in part to a grade crossing sfaety and reduction program in the 1990's. This program came about as the city citizens hoped to eliminate the use of train horns and open up blocked grade crossings faster. This seems to have worked out fairly well, though Oshkosh still has it's share of train-pedestrian accidents. |

Former Chicago and Northwestern Yard |
Description: |
It was noted in the late winter of 2015/2016 that the Canadian National had quit using the yard in Oshkosh. They had been using the yard for the local (not based in Oshkosh) to store cars and sort them for the local industries. When it was noticed the yard was emptied, optimistic thoughts were that it was going to get some work done to keep it viable. Perhaps, an increase in local business was coming in the future. This was not to be the case. The yard tracks were torn out in the summer of 2016.The four tracks branching off to the right of the main are now gone. The siding on the left and it's two spurs are still in use. The turnout at the bottom serves Blended Waxes, a few hundred feet behind the photographers point, and the other one is sometimes (very rarely) used to load pulp wood. The sorting that was done here is now done on the Pluswood spur on the former CNW line that branched from Oshkosh to Hortonville and beyond. This line is now truncated within Oshkosh, just beyond Pluswood. The end of the line there has a long runaround track and is where the CN now does it's storing and sorting. Obviously, the capacity of a yard is no longer required to serve what industry is left in Oshkosh. |

Though Utley is still recognized as a geographic location, the city that was once located here no longer exists. This shot was taken from the location of the Utley single room school house which was built in 1844 and closed in 1942. In the late 1800's, Utley had a population of around 500, with the towns main activity being centered around The Wisconsin Granite Company's Quarry No. 69 ( 1909 The Reporter, Volume 42). The town gradually ceased to exist over the next few decades, with the school outlasting the community, serving the children of the rural surrounding area. The quarry mined black granite for use in larger cities, mainly Chicago. Today the quarrying in the immediate vicinity is done by Badger Mining, shipping a tremendous amount of sand, but black granite can also be found piled up. |

Wooden Trestle Spanning a Branch of the Menominee River |
Description: |
On the Wisconsin side of the Menominee River, the CNW ran along Water Street and had this branch come off to access an island with multiple water front businesses at this Great Lakes port city. In the early 20th Century, there was a myriad of tracks in this industrial area. Today, there is but the remains of one spur that runs to a Waupaca Foundry facility. It is out of service, and mostly torn up. This trestle remains as the most visible piece of that line. |

Bridging the Peshtigo River |
Description: |
The former Chicago Northwestern bridge across the Peshtigo River. The Line is now part of the CN empire, but there isn't much work for the railroad in Peshtigo now. The Badger Paper Mill Inc. spur is out of service and mostly torn up, though the mill is still in operation. There is a short passing siding/run around track in town, but the only business that looks like it could easily get rail service is the Peshtigo Feed Mill, and that looks to be a very rare occurrence, if ever at all either. |

Chicago & Northwestern station |
Description: |
Looking toward Hall Ave at the former CNW station currently used by the CN. Marinette was a two railroad town, served by the Milwaukee Road and the CNW. The Escanaba and Lake Superior replaced the Milwaukee's presence in town. The CNW was replaced by the Union Pacific, very briefly, who in turn spun it off to the Wisconsin Central. The WC was then bought by the Canadian National, who still runs through town and works with the ELS. The ELS line to here from Crivitz is usually plugged with stored cars, yet the ELS keeps a switcher in the area (engine house located across the river in Menominee, MI) to work the industries. Sources indicate that the switching in Marinette and Menominee is mainly done by ELS crews, with the CN taking care of the incoming and outgoing traffic. |

WSOR 3813 |
Description: |
A WSOR (WATCO) train fould the County Highway FF grade crossing in Fisk as it picks up some GACX cars from a siding. The loco's are on the 1910 built bridge across Eight Mile Creek, which has since been replaced over the summer of 2016. The neat Old Style sign at the local bar has also met it's demise over the latter half of the 2016 summer, due to vandalism. I have noticed these types of signs are starting to disappear as beer marketing practices have been changing. |
