The 9571 works the Neenah yard from the north end. The Winneconne overpass crosses the tracks here now, but not too long ago, the crossing was at grade. Winneconne Avenue was protected by lights, gates and had a manned elevated tower due to the frequent moves made across the grade crossing. This was the first overpass of three put in to avoid delays in road traffic. |

The trains are across what was once the Byrd Street grade crossing which was taken out with the building of three overpasses across the railroad in Neenah. |

Crossing over from the former CNW main to the former Soo Line main on the south side of Neenah. The train looks like a typical set for the run to Waupaca Foundry with scrap and coke loads. Perhaps the cars are destined for the local Neenah Foundry just a couple hundred yards from this location. I didn't have time to find out. |

Two units work the former CNW line from Appleton Junction to Kaukauna South, which now ends here in Combined Locks at the Appvion paper mill. This facility is the Appleton Coated Papers mill. The mill is switched on two sides by the railroad, which had enough business to warrant a small yard on the opposite side from this location. Most of those tracks are now gone, as it waqs probably used in conjunction with switching the closed NuPage (Kimberly Clark) mill in Kimberly. The modern Wisconsin Central had enough business on this line to actually station a crew down in this river valley. |
