WSOR 3809 |
Description: |
A typical Horicon to Oshkosh set of power crosses Stanton St. near the grain elevator as it approaches Oshkosh Ave. in Ripon. The WSOR typically runs a turn to Oshkosh daily on the Milwaukee Road's old Twelfth Subdivision from Horicon, serving numerous communites along the way. This return trip had a lighter load with only three tanks and two boxcars. |

A short train returning to Horicon from Oshkosh on Memorial Day, 2014, leaves Reeds Corners. Reeds Corners is one of the oldest settlements in the Town of Metomen in Fond du Lac County. It was once a prominent community on the original Milwaukee and Horicon Railway, with two churches, a depot, post office and local stores and shops. The community lost its post office and station in 1873. They were moved a half mile south and renamed Metomen. Today, Reeds Corners is a small collection of homes with Reeds Corners Bethel Cemetary marking the location of the original community. |

A train of ballast hoppers being pulled past the Badger Mining Corporation loop track at Utley. Though Utley is still recognized as a geographic location, the city that was once located here no longer exists. This shot was taken from the location of the Utley single room school house which was built in 1844 and closed in 1942. In the late 1800's, Utley had a population of around 500, with the towns main activity being centered around The Wisconsin Granite Company's Quarry No. 69 ( 1909 The Reporter, Volume 42). The town gradually ceased to exist over the next few decades, with the school outlasting the community, serving the children of the rural surrounding area. The quarry mined black granite for use in larger cities, mainly Chicago. Today the quarrying in the immediate vicinity is done by Badger Mining, shipping a tremendous amount of sand, but black granite can also be found piled up. |

The neat Old Style sign at the local bar has also met it's demise over the latter half of the 2016 summer, due to vandalism. I have noticed these types of signs are starting to disappear as beer marketing practices have been changing. |

WSOR 3809 |
Description: |
The WSOR working on the spur to the Seneca canning facility located on former Chicago and Northwestern right of way. Ripon was once home to an at grade crossing of the Chicago and Northwestern and the Milwaukee Road. The Milwaukee Road line is still in use as a branch from Horicon to Oshkosh with the WSOR. The Chicago and Northwestern line in use is only two short spurs from the junction. One is a storage track along Gothic Mill Pond. The other is to the canning plant, about a half mile to the east of the junction. |
