GTW 4924 |
Description: |
A local approaches the Racine Street grade crossing in Menasha at mile post 2, from Neenah, on the Manitowoc Subdivision. Canadian National now owns this line that started as an original Wisconsin Central property. The line eventually went to Soo Line and then became a part of the modern Wisconsin Central until the CN bought them up. The Milwaukee Road (Milwaukee and Northern) ran parallel to these tracks in Menasha and granted the original WC/Soo Line trackage rights to Hilbert from the junction near the ends of their yards in Menasha. |

Description: |
A CN local serving industries along what was once the main right of way thru the Fox Cities for the CNW. Ther crew is crossing Commercial Street in Neenah. The CNW's yard was right in this area with at least three tracks crossing Comercial Street. Currently only two tracks cross the road with only a few businesses receiving rail service to the 4928's rear. The middle section of the CNW route thru Neenah has been torn out, but businesses are still served on each side of town with access from the former Soo Line right of way. The yard that was here which the CNW worked out of to serve Neenah and Menasha has been stripped of about half of its tracks and now only serves to organize the local's cars for switching the industries reached from this point. |

Description: |
A GTW unit moves along an industrial spur towards the Washington Street grade crossing. The trees make it hard to see, but the unit is traversing between two old defunct rail served buildings to which the turnouts have been removed and mother nature is trying to reclaim. To get to this point, the crew has taken a turnout from the former CNW Neenah Yard on it's north end and ducked in behind the buildings. This spur used to go all the way to serve Gilbert Paper Comany but now only serves the former General Chemical facility. I noticed the General Chemical facility has recently changed names since the new year, unfortunately I do not recall the new name. |

After departing the former CNW Neenah Yard and running between some buildings in close proximity to the track, the 4934 crosses Washington Street. The CN uses these former CNW rails to serve what was a General Chemical facility. The spur also served Gilbert Paper Company from the south side of the Fox River and used to get at least two switches per day. Gilbert Paper also had another spur leading to it that came across the river and had boxcars spotted on that side of the building upon a trestle. |

A local which serves Little Chute and Kaukauna, working out of Neenah, is on a bridge spanning the Fox River to switch Expera Specialty Solutions. The mill has an in plant crew with a modern high rail to switch inside the mill, but the local will make the swap of outgoing for incoming cars. The old building to the right is one of the original Thilmany Paper buildings. The original plant, started in 1883, is no longer being used by the company, much of it has been razed. Fortunately, this old building is being saved for it's historic significance to the city and will find a new use. The C&NW bridge the train is on used to connect the C&NW lines on both sides of the river. The line on the south side ran from Appleton to Manitowoc via Kaukauna. The line now ends at the Apvion mill in Combined Locks. All the track on the south side of the river in Kaukauna has been removed. |

After swapping cars at the Expera Specialty Solutions (formerly Thilmany Paper) mill, the CN local to kaukauna from Neenah climbs back uphill from the Fox River to get back to the mainline. Along the way upgrade, the train crosses an old CNW swing bridge across a navigational canal for the Fox River. The canal was out of service and dry for many years, but the locks and navigation system were all re-opened from Green Bay to Lake Winnebago in the fall of 2015. Shortly thereafter, the last lock to Lake Winnebago was closed due to an invasive species of fish being found below the lock. |

IC 3138 |
Description: |
A train is crossing over off the Shawano Subdivision onto the mainline of what I believe to be the Fox River Subdivision to pick up a cut of at least fifteen pulpwood and woodchip cars off the siding at Stroebe in the Town of Menasha. I am uncertain if the CN still refers to the line to Green Bay north of Neenah as the Fox River Subdivision as my information shows the Wisconsin Central had. |

The CN train crossing over from the Shawano sub onto the Fox River sub has made it onto the siding and must continue until the rear is clear of the turnout from the Shawano sub. Once clear of this cross over, the train will shove back to pick up a cut of woodchip and pulpwood cars. As cold as the weather was, this move took a while to complete. I hope the crewman on the ground was able to stay warm. |

A gap in the cars on the yard tracks in Neenah allows a peek at the congregated power in front of the depot. This is the former Soo Line (WC) yard in Neenah. A lot of locals work out of this yard, though the traffic has diminished over the last couple decades as the paper mills are being lost to closure. Fortunately, there have been some new businesses come along to fill some of the void. |

IC 9625 |
Description: |
Thirty five years ago, this was the Soo Line yard in Neenah. The yard was usually quite full and bustling with activity. The Soo seemed to be the most prosperous railroad of the three serving the area. (Milwaukee Road and Chicago and Northwestern being the other two) Naive thinking had one believe the Soo would be around forever. The Milwaukee Road was up for sale, and would be gone, but not the Soo. The CNW also figured to be around for a long to come. It was only a matter of less than ten years for all three to be gone. Of the two yards in town, only the Soo Line yard remains serving close to its original purpose. There are many less boxcars, and the Soo white, red and black a fading memory. Back in 1982, a teenage rail fan, took it all for granted and would have never imagined the CN coming in and absorbing it all. |

Description: |
A local crosses S. Broadway as it negotiates a wye on it's return to the North Green Bay yard (ex Chicago & Northwestern). The train had been working an industrial area on the northwestern part of town accessed via the former Green Bay and Western line that headed out of Green Bay across the state. That line now ends at the industrial park. |

Catalyst Paper Spur |
Description: |
GTW 6226 can be seen pulling upgrade from the Catalyst Paper mill located along the Wisconsin River in Biron. Not to be confused with Byron or Byron Hill along the former Soo Line (Wisconsin Central), Biron is located along the former Green Bay and Western route between Plover and Wisconsin Rapids. Catalyst Paper has what has become typical of most large mills. It has changed hands numerous times in the last couple decades. Most recently, since this photo was taken, the mill has been sold to the Hong Kong based Nine Dragons and is now called ND Paper, Biron. Nine Dragons acquired two mills from Catalyst in 2018 and will be investing a great deal of money into the plants. The Biron mill will be getting a $189 million investment. |
