WSOR 4005
Title:  WSOR 4005
Description:  Another close look for those thinking about building a model of one of these WSOR units. This unit came to the WSOR in 2002. The loco was originally purchased by the Rock Island in 1972 as the 4793, part of the 4790 - 4799 order from EMD. The unit then became ICG 6043 after the Rock liquidation. After the ICG, the unit became EMDX 6043 before going to the WSOR. This unit was one of only 10 SD40-2's the Rock ordered new. I have conflicting dates regarding when this order was made by the Rock. An older locomotive roster from the early 1980's by Kalmbach Publishing indicates 1972, but the book "The WSOR Story" gives the original purchase year as 1973.

Pink Lady Ballast
Title:  Pink Lady Ballast
Description:  During the summer of 2015, "Pink Lady" ballast began to make an appearance on the WSOR line from Horicon to Oshkosh. This shot was taken at the Burr Oak Road grade crossing in Fisk. Some areas have had a heavier application of the ballast from a quarry near Rock Springs, Wi. The WSOR had been operating the line, which the quarry is located on, via a lease with the Union Pacific. The Wisconsin D.O.T. secured an agreement to purchase the line from the U.P. for $30 million in 2014. The WSOR is still the operator of the former C&NW corridor which runs from Madison to Reedsberg, and now Pink Lady ballast can be found spreading throughout the WSOR system, as seen here on this former Milwaukee Road line.

Description:  Heading into Ripon from Oshkosh, a WSOR train passes some round bales of hay. The train is entering the Northeast Industrial Park of Ripon, which will soon have a new tenant. Alliance laundry Systems is adding on, yet again to it's presence in Ripon. A nice change of pace considering most of the closures in business lately.

WSOR 3803
Title:  WSOR 3803
Description:  A train of ballast hoppers being pulled past the Badger Mining Corporation loop track at Utley. Though Utley is still recognized as a geographic location, the city that was once located here no longer exists. This shot was taken from the location of the Utley single room school house which was built in 1844 and closed in 1942. In the late 1800's, Utley had a population of around 500, with the towns main activity being centered around The Wisconsin Granite Company's Quarry No. 69 ( 1909 The Reporter, Volume 42). The town gradually ceased to exist over the next few decades, with the school outlasting the community, serving the children of the rural surrounding area. The quarry mined black granite for use in larger cities, mainly Chicago. Today the quarrying in the immediate vicinity is done by Badger Mining, shipping a tremendous amount of sand, but black granite can also be found piled up.

The line is former Milwaukee Road territory and runs from Horicon to Cambria as a part of the WSOR. Just west of Randolph, the line passes under the former Chicago and Northwestern Adams line. The CNW bridge over the tracks can be seen at the rails horizon in this photo. The Adams line is now part of the Union Pacific.

CRDX 12554
Title:  CRDX 12554
Description:  Covered hoppers and boxcars on the WSOR siding in Randolph. This line is the Milwaukee Road's "old line" to La Crosse, WI. The line went from Milwaukee to La Crosse via Horicon and Cambria to Portage and on to La Crosse. The line that became the favorable route went from Milwaukee through Watertown to Portage and on to La Crosse. For the Milwaukee it became a secondary line, and now with the WSOR, the line truncates at the Del Monte plant entrance in Cambria.

Beaver Dam Switching
Title:  Beaver Dam Switching
Description:  After leaving part of the train in the clear, west of N. Center Street, the Cmbria sub job switches the industrial park in Beaver Dam. The railbox car is on a spur leading to some businesses also. There are two spurs leading off the branch main at this park. There are quite a few customers here. The Milwaukee Road used to run into downtown Beaver Dam and do switching along a return loop of track. The traces of the right of way for the loop are still visible, though the rails have been torn up. This park is located closer to the main of the branch and is the new center of manufacturing, as the downtown district is being redeveloped from industry.

Stored GACX two bay covered hoppers.
Title:  Stored GACX two bay covered hoppers.
Description:  Some empty GACX hoppers waiting for their turn to the WATCO terminal facility to be loaded in Oshkosh. The cars sit on a siding along some old building foundations that may have been part of any of numerous business activities historically located here. Fisk, once known as Fisk's Corners, had a station, post office, general store, blacksmith, implement store and a grain elevator. Livestock and farm produce were shipped from here on the Milwaukee Road. The old 1910 built bridge across Eight Mile Creek is visible just beyond the turnout. This bridge was replaced in July/August of 1016. Eight Mile Creek has also been known as Fisk's Creek, however, Eight Mile Creek seems to be the official name as it is the one used in modern maps.

Rebuilding a Timber Trestle along the WSOR.
Title:  Rebuilding a Timber Trestle along the WSOR.
Description:  WATCO (present owner of the WSOR) was able to use some state funding to improve bridges. The ELS was also a recipient of some of this funding. Here, a contractor rebuilds a timber trestle located between Elo and Fisk along a former Milwaukee Road branch to Oshkosh from Horicon. The trestle provides access through the right of way's fill between fields for a farm.

Description:  A WSOR (WATCO) train fould the County Highway FF grade crossing in Fisk as it picks up some GACX cars from a siding. The loco's are on the 1910 built bridge across Eight Mile Creek, which has since been replaced over the summer of 2016. The neat Old Style sign at the local bar has also met it's demise over the latter half of the 2016 summer, due to vandalism. I have noticed these types of signs are starting to disappear as beer marketing practices have been changing.
