CN 2317
Title:  CN 2317
Description:  As the locals refer to it, "behind the Coke Plant" (Coca -Cola Bottling) is a breakwater on Lake Winnebago that many people fish from. The old CNW line to Green Bay also runs there. Here a CN maniline freight runs through, and enters the south end of the yard at Oshkosh. The black specks are swarming lake flies that appear every spring.

Title:  Along Broad Street
Description:  Lead unit 8926 and trailing unit 2716 rolling along toward the new bridge over the Fox River. The trains come quiet and quick thanks to reduced number of grade crossings and a no horn ordinance. This train had distributed power in its middle, but I wasn't ready for it and missed it.

TBOX 661101
Title:  TBOX 661101
Description:  Before the CN tore out the former CNW yard along Pioneer Drive, this was a common sight. Unfortunately, the yard is gone. The covered hoppers are now stored and sorted on a run around track at the end of the spur which was used to serve Pluswood. Pluswood has closed during the summer of 2017. Pluswood was a user of boxcars, leaving only one company (Noffke Lumber) on the CN in Oshkosh that would possibly get boxcars. Seeing boxcars on the local in Oshkosh will be a rare sight in the future. It is truly astounding how much rail infrastructure has been torn out of Oshkosh since 1970, along with the businesses it served.

CN 2839
Title:  CN 2839
Description:  A CN train heads railroad east across the E. 14th Avenue grade crossing in Oshkosh. Five units are on the head of this train running on what was originally CNW right of way along Lake Winnebago. The trains roll through Oshkosh at speed up to 35 MPH, thanks in part to a grade crossing sfaety and reduction program in the 1990's. This program came about as the city citizens hoped to eliminate the use of train horns and open up blocked grade crossings faster. This seems to have worked out fairly well, though Oshkosh still has it's share of train-pedestrian accidents.

AOK 607132
Title:  AOK 607132
Description:  A pulpwood car spotted on a the team track at the former Chicago & Northwestern Yard in Oshkosh. The track once lead into the Buckstaff factory, which had a considerable amount of track within the confines of it's property to serve it. Pulpwood is not normally loaded from here, but once in a while a load will be sent from here. Probably less than 15 per year. Much has changed in this location since the image was captured. The defunct Buckstaff factory has been torn down to be replaced by a basketball arena. The yard tracks in the foreground have also been removed as CN modifies its infrastructure in Oshkosh to adjust for the diminished amount of rail customers in town.

The End is Near
Title:  The End is Near
Description:  After the former C&NW yard in Oshkosh sat empty for a few months, it was a surprise to see some maintenance of way equipment form a contractor in the yard. Hopes were that the yard was to be re-done and set up for a long term future of use. Alas, the future of the yard was very short. Within a matter of days, the yard tracks were torn out leaving only a run around track and a short spur. Blended Waxes is served from the south end of the run around. The bascule bridge over the Fox River is visible in the background.

CN 2820
Title:  CN 2820
Description:  A CN stack train heads north at Oshkosh. The train is approaching a bridge over a ditch/creek that empties into Lake Winnebago. This former C&NW line had a great deal more local business to attend to 30 years ago, but under the CN train volume has increased significantly. The local customer base has diminished but the CN has transformed this line into part of its trans-con line to Chicago and beyond. Through freight volume can be quite high with trains following as close as 5 to 10 minutes apart at times.

CN 2820
Title:  CN 2820
Description:  A CN stack train storms over a bridge on the south side of Oshkosh. Trains run along this corridor parallel South Main at speeds around 30 MPH. The modern Wisconsin Central and the city worked to increase train speeds and safety through Oshkosh after the WC purchased the Fox River Valley Railroad. Grade crossings were closed, the old Soo Line (WC) route through town was pulled up, gates were installed at all grade crossings and a no horn order (not what I would consider a safety enhancement) was put into effect. There are some nice areas along this stretch of the line to watch the trains while enjoying some of Oshkosh's park land.

14th Avenue Grade Crossing
Title:  14th Avenue Grade Crossing
Description:  Tank cars are spotted at Blended Waxes along CN's former Chicago and Northwestern line in Oshkosh. The grade crossing is located at what was the south end of the CNW yard in Oshkosh. Some of the yards remains are visible waiting to be cleaned up. twnet years before this photo, an old CNW 40' boxcar could usually be found spotted on this end of the yard. It was used, so I am told, as a buffer car to reach into the Blended Waxes spur, because of the tight curves to get in there. The spur has been realigned and the boxcar has moved on into oblivion.

Oshkosh Yard Office
Title:  Oshkosh Yard Office
Description:  A look at the station adjacent the Oshkosh siding. The ballast in the foreground once held a CNW yard. I am uncertain whether the CNW built the smaller station building, it seems to be old enough and the architecture matches other CNW structures I am familiar with (Neenah yard office, for one) to indicate it is CNW built. The larger shed was put in under the Fox River Valley Railroad in the either 1991 or 1992. I worked at an adjacent property and figured the shed to be an engine house to protect the old GP7 or GP9 (I can't recall the engine number of the unit usually here) that was stationed here to serve Oshkosh. Alas, no rails were ever laid to the structure as it was used for M.o.W. services.

Oshkosh Yard Vicinity
Title:  Oshkosh Yard Vicinity
Description:  A look into the yard area from the northwest corner along Pioneer Drive in Oshkosh. The tan building was put in by the Fox River Valley Railroad and the smaller station/yard office can be seen as a tan blob through the trees behind it. An industrial spur line ran along the side of the building and curved off to the right at about the mid foreground of the photo. This line, was used to serve industries located along the river, most of which closed in the mid to late '80's. The track was torn out after Jeld-Wen purchased Morgan Manufacturing and closed it down, some time in the mid 1990's. I am unsure if Morgan used rail service at that time. I do know that the line was used to access the north bank of the river via the joint Soo-Milwaukee Road bridge as late as 1990, having witnessed a FRVR train trundle along Summit Avenue to access the northern industrial park. In this photo a small excavator can be seen working in the tree line cleaning out debris. Hopes are that perhaps the railroad was to be adding some sort of infrastructure to add capacity, but nothing has seems to have come from it railroad related. However, some information lists the area as Pioneer Drive Park now. A good place to watch the CN trans-con.

Southern Bridge Abutment of CN Fox River Crossing
Title:  Southern Bridge Abutment of CN Fox River Crossing
Description:  Looking generally east along the shore of the Fox River in Oshkosh at the south end of the CN bridge across the Fox River in Oshkosh. The grade crossingat the end of the bridge is for Pioneer Drive and the bridge signals are visible. The bridge has a Bascule lift to clear the navigational channel in the middle to clear the waters for boat traffic. The CNW had a swing bridge located here that was built in 1899, the old stone work can be seen on the lower, obviously older, part of the abutment.

Trans-Con Crossing of the Fox River
Title:  Trans-Con Crossing of the Fox River
Description:  Looking at the CN bridge across the Fox River in Oshkosh from the northwest quadrant. The grey tower type structure is the operation center for the bridge. The tracks running in the pavement are remnants from the Chicago and Northwestern's access to the industry on the north side of the riverfront industry that was prevalent along the river. This area has been eventually redeveloped with this little piece of rail left as a reminder near the east side of the Leach Amphitheater grounds at Riverside Park.

Looking North at Ceape and Broad
Title:  Looking North at Ceape and Broad
Description:  The former CNW line through Oshkosh, though in some spots is near street running status, is fairly straight and was the preferred route when the Wisconsin Central consolidated its route through town The heavily curved Soo Line right of was was pulled up in favor of this one. From the corner of Ceape and Broad one gets a look at just how confusing the area can be to newcomers. Broad runs along on both sides of the track, some of it one way, some of it not. With the grade crossing reduction and upgrading of those remaining by the WC in 1996 and 1997, train speeds through here can be as high as 30 mph along this stretch of what is now Canadian National.
